Josep Oliu is Chairman of Banco Sabadell. He studied Economics at the University of Barcelona and received his PhD in economics from the University of Minnesota. In 1982 he obtained the chair in economic theory at the University of Oviedo, where he is a professor on leave. During the 1980s he worked at the Instituto Nacional de Industria, where he held the position of Director of Studies and Strategy and where he was Director of Planning between 1984 and 1986. In 1986, shortly after being appointed president of the Barcelona Plaça Financiera Association, he joined Banco de Sabadell as technical general secretary. In 1989 he was appointed director of the bank and CEO of Sabadell Multibanca. In January 1991 he replaced his father, Joan Oliu i Pich, as general manager. He has held various management positions in the financial institution, such as director (1990-1995), general manager (1991-1999) and chairman from 1999 to the present.
